1）besides是介词，意为“除了……以外（还有）”，具有肯定和附加的涵义，即表示“在……之外，还另加……”，后接名词、动词-ing形式或代词。如：
Besides English，he is good at French．除了英语以外，他的法语也很好。
2) except只作介词，是“除……之外（不包括本身在内）”的意思，有否定和排除的涵义，表示从整体中除去一部分。如：
We all succeed except him．除了他以外，我们都获得了成功。
3）except for 和except不同之处是：前者“除开”的部分和论述的部分通常不是同一类事物，而后者则为同一类事物。试比较：
This article is easy to understand except for some idiomatic expressions.
这篇文章除了几处习惯用语外，是很容易懂的。
Except this one, the other articles are easy to understand. 除了这篇文章，其他的文章都好懂得。
4）except that 其后需加从句，用来表示理由或细节，修正前面所说的情况。可以与except for互换。
e.g. Your composition is well-written except that there are some spelling mistakes.
I usually go to school by bike except when it rains.
